    Dan Hyman, model, entrepreneur and fan of fitness, recently completed his personal training course with us. We caught up with him to chat about the course, his career and his plans for the future.

    Tell us a bit about yourself?

    I’m London based and currently modelling which takes up most of my time. In my spare time I have started an online platform called EATLOOKFEEL, in which I provide nutrition, training and mindset strategies remotely for online clients and will be releasing the ‘EATLOOKFEEL x Modern Healthy’ rulebook over the next few months when the time is right.

    What does your training schedule look like, how do you like to train?

    I base my training around the foundation of health. My goal is to build a healthy, functional physique that allows me to comfortably do all the things I need to do in life as well as being aesthetic for my modelling commitments.

    I like to train at a high intensity and incorporate core compound lifting techniques with intense supersets and CrossFit conditioning methods. I predominantly split my training into push/pull/lower and then use HIIT/conditioning full body workouts in and around this.

    I programme my training predominately starting with a ‘strength phase’ which includes the main core compound movement patterns. Then moving to a ‘accessory/hypertrophy phase’ which includes supersets incorporating more isolation movements. Finally finishing with a ‘conditioning/finisher phase’ which is performed at a higher intensity designed to raise the heart rate and often targeting the specific area trained.

    How has your training and mindset changed over the years?

    My training has changed hugely. The most conscious change I’ve made is focusing on my overall health therefore ensuring my form and technique is correct before I worry about the weights I am lifting.

    I have also had to make several changes due to my modelling commitments. I stay a certain size to fit the generic sample size clothes I have had to educate myself to build the best, healthiest physique whilst still fitting these measurements which has led to me changing my training hugely, adopting a higher intensity style of training.

    I also judge no one. Every single one of us has the right and choice over how we approach our personal nutrition, training and mindset. I believe everyone can benefit in all aspects of life from addressing these principles, but no one should be judged on their individual choices.

    It must be tough to stick to your nutrition plan when you are out and about, any tips?

    Think and prepare ahead of time is your best bet. There is usually time if you want there to be. If you can’t prepare your own food, then just make healthy and educated decisions. Think long term, its easy when caught out and about to make un-healthy decisions but it’s important to keep in mind your longer-term goals and what is going to get you closer to that goal.

    Why did you want to do a PT course?

    I genuinely love helping people become the best version of themselves possible by addressing the principles of nutrition, training and mindset. That’s what I get self-satisfaction/achievement from. My long-term goal is to create a living from doing exactly that. I completed my PT qualification and my nutrition diploma to educate myself thoroughly and gain the credibility and knowledge to launch and continue to grow the EATLOOKFEEL brand.

    What did you think of the TRAINFITNESS course – highlights, general thoughts on the course?

    TRAINFITNESS were amazing to me, I was very lucky to do my qualification through them. Although very intense at times the education is very well delivered, and the facilities are second to none. They were very accommodating and understanding around my travel and modelling commitments, which made my life much easier and enabled me to get my full qualification in 8 weeks.

    They are very accommodating to all levels, take everything back to basics and don’t allow anyone to think they already know it all which I needed and I believe creates a stronger foundation of knowledge going forward.

    Has the course changed the way you train if so how?

    Very much so. Taking every core movement pattern back to basics and starting again was a game changer for me. It’s easy to watch videos on YouTube/Social media and get into the mindset that the way you do things is correct. To completely start every movement pattern again from scratch really does highlight the flaws in your own form and techniques which is invaluable both with your own personal training and also when approaching client training.

    What’s next for you?

    I am continuing to model whilst providing for my online clients through the EATLOOKFEEL platform. I currently am enjoying the balance between the two.

    I will be releasing the ‘EATLOOKFEEL x Modern Healthy’ blueprint in Q1 2019 which is a 60-page book designed to educate users to be able to create a healthier, happier lifestyle for themselves by addressing the 3 core principles of health, nutrition, training and mindset. While providing training blocks and nutrition strategies works for some people it often doesn’t provide the education required to make it sustainable over a long period of time, which is why I wrote the blueprint in the way that I did.

    I have been lucky enough to gain online clients through word of mouth so far but going further into 2019 I am going to focus on scaling it up and opening the EATLOOKFEEL method to the public enabling more people to get involved. Providing nutrition, training and mindset strategies for people is something that I genuinely love and get a lot from but it’s just ensuring I have the time to do it properly around my modelling and travelling commitments.

    Favourite spot to grab lunch on the go?

    Island Poke (Hawaiian/Sushi) Tuna, Rice, Mango, Seaweed, Onion, Broccoli. GAMECHANGER.

    Signature Dish?

    What is Indoor Cycling?

    Indoor cycling sometimes known as “spinning” is a form of group exercise typically with classes of 15-20 people. These classes are generally set to music, moving to the beat/rhythm of the selected playlist. They are tough and will get your heart rate up and are an excellent addition to a healthy living lifestyle.

    Participants don’t need to have natural rhythm to take part in spinning classes, they aren’t exercise to music classes. The music is normally used to signal when there will be a change of pace or change of position on the bike.

    A qualified fitness professional, who has completed a recognised indoor cycling instructor course will lead the spinning class. Participants will ride whilst standing and sitting. During a class, participants will be sprinting and going at a steady pace. There will also be changes in the resistance to the pedals making this an extremely effective type of training session.

    Indoor cycling is a great way for certified personal trainers to increase their potential earnings, given how accessible it is to the fitness and wider community. While it is hard, indoor cycling is scalable, those taking part can ease off when they need to, keep the resistance low and can work around injuries or impingements.

    There are also several spinning classes in fitness clubs and dedicated cycling studios making it easier to find somewhere to get additional work.

    While much depends on the energy of spinning instructors, indoor cycling classes are fun and group orientated. Get it right and you could have participants coming back every week, which means more revenue for you.

    What does it take to be an indoor cycling instructor?


    The primary role of spinning instructors is to engage with the audience and to inspire them to work harder, to push themselves beyond their usual limits.

    Spinning instructors do this with encouragement, banter, high energy and lots of passion. The more you love what you are doing, the more that will directly impact the energy levels of your class. If you’re flat, disinterested and lacking energy your spinning class will be less interesting to punters.

    Be loud, be fun and keep it encouraging. Make sure to pay attention to everyone, the fit, the regulars and those coming back to fitness or just starting out, they all require a bit of trainer love and encouragement. Show your passion and your classes will always come back for more.

    A love of music

    Much of an indoor cycling class is based on music. Classes aren’t completed to the beat of the music, but the music is used to signal changes and prepare participants for the next challenge. More, music is used to keep the energy levels high, if you have a high tempo, pumping soundtrack, you are more likely to get the most out of your class participants.

    As your music choices are going to be very important, you will need to have a variety of tracks. Variation is key to a successful cycling class. You can buy indoor cycling playlists specifically designed for the job!

    Indoor Cycling Instructor Course

    The bike is your friend

    As an indoor cycling instructor, it really does help if you enjoy being on the bike. Sure, you can be completely practical about it and run a cycling class just to supplement your income but having a love of riding will help get the best out of you and your participants.

    It's going to make it a lot easier in the long run if you are comfortable on a bike, in front of a group, delivering spinning classes day after day.

    It will also help immensely if you have good technique and levels of fitness too.

    Becoming an indoor cycling instructor

    To become an indoor cycling, you’ll hold either a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-based Exercise or Exercise to Music), or a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. These will give you the practical skills and choreography skills required to successfully run a group indoor cycling class.

    Our group indoor cycling course has been designed to offer you the skills needed to plan and deliver varied, fun and effective indoor cycling classes.

    On the course you will cover training methods for group indoor cycling, class structure, design, adaptation and progression. You will also cover riding techniques.

    Study the training methods and riding techniques, class structure, adaptations and progressions, as well as planning to assess and minimise risk.

    The cycle instructor course is delivered part time. You will work through the online learning and then complete a combined training and assessment day. The course is worth 16 CPD points and is recognised by REPs.

    What next

    Once you have completed your indoor cycling course you have various options. If you are already a personal trainer you could offer to run spinning classes in your gym. You can also look to work at a studio that offers indoor cycling.

    If you are looking to add more skills and want to offer more, you could look at a yoga instructor course. If you are a fitness instructor, you could do your personal training course. The options available to you are varied and will allow you to carve a niche for yourself in the growing health and fitness sector.

    So, now you're a qualified personal trainer it's time to go out and win some clients. Building a successful personal training brand isn’t a science, with everything in life, hard work, a bit of luck and persistence are required. However, that isn't to say that certain marketing plans, methods and tactics can't be employed to really give your personal training business a good head start.

    Often, we see new personal trainers jump, head first, into the life of a personal trainer without really considering the bigger picture.

    Fuelled by social media, these guys and girls expect big bucks and a diary bursting at the seams with client session. Sorry to burst that bubble, but unless you get VERY lucky, it just doesn’t work like that.

    Building a successful training business takes time and patience and a well thought out marketing strategy.

    With a sound marketing strategy and a well thought out process as to how you will market yourself, you will give yourself the best chance to promote your business to the widest possible audience and maximise your chance of growth.

    Below we highlight some of the strategies and marketing tips we think you should employ to promote your fitness business and market yourself to maximise your chances of success.

    It all starts with a smile

    Never underestimate the power of a good smile when looking to build a new client relationship. When working the gym floor, consider how you come across to potential clients as first impressions are everything.

    By being friendly, approachable and helpful, you will immediately be building relationships. A successful personal training business always starts with relationship building.

    As soon as you step onto the gym floor market yourself, make a good impression, don’t hard sell, offer some tips (without forcing them on gym users) and you will be remembered when those gym users want a personal trainer.

    Marketing Your Personal Training Business

    Don’t fear free or discounted sessions

    It might seem counter intuitive to offer free sessions when you are trying to make a living out of personal training. But actually, ‘try before you buy’ is a very effective marketing strategy.

    You only need to offer a 30-minute personal training session, but if it impresses and/inspires those you work with it could turn into a great way of getting new clients.

    A short, free one-to-one session or small group session, will allow you to show off your knowledge, help promote yourself and will significantly contribute to how you build your personal training business.

    Take group exercise classes

    What better way to promote your training business to a mass audience than to deliver an exercise class to a room full of eager fitness fans. No seriously, group exercise has come a long way since the 80's.

    A HIIT class, boot camps, mobility class, circuit training, spin…There are plenty of classes and environments you could be teaching in.

    This fitness networking will help build your reputation, get people talking about you; word of mouth marketing is still a great marketing strategy.

    Group sessions will put you in front of lots of potential personal training clients. Get it right and you might find yourself dealing with lots of enquiries.

    Offer online coaching

    A big part of the personal training industry appears to be heading towards the online coaching model. This isn’t heralding the death of the gym based personal trainer, but it is becoming increasing popular.

    This fitness trend isn't going away and as business owners you should be looking to tap into this growth area.

    While some might argue that zero contact time between client and coach, beyond an initial phone, skype or email consultation is a bad thing, there are potential clients who are very comfortable in a gym environment but just want a programme from a personal trainer.

    We would always recommend that a complete newbie train with a personal trainer in a gym environment, but for those with a decent understanding of training who might be time poor, the online coaching method might be best.

    By offering online fitness training and structured training plans delivered via email, you a can reach out to a greater base of potential personal training clients.

    Find local partners

    One easy way to promote yourself and your personal training business and reach more personal training clients is cross promotion.

    Working with another company that works in a similar space is a great way to tap into a wider network. It's an extremely effective marketing strategy and one you should absolutely pursue.

    A local nutritionist or physiotherapist are examples of good partners. Nutritionists could offer discounted nutrition plans if you refer them to your personal training clients.

    A physiotherapist could send their clients to you for post treatment training and you could send your clients to the physio for treatment.

    Through cross promotion, you will each be entering a mutually beneficial relationship, which could see a steady stream of new personal training clients.

    Marketing Your Personal Training Business

    Guest Post

    For your personal training business to grow, you will want potential clients to see you as an authority on fitness and training. One way to show authority is to write for recognised publications and blogs. By submitting your articles and having them posted on blogs and news sites, you improve your credibility. You can send out an email to existing clients every time a guest post goes live to keep your current personal training clients up to date.

    You can also place links on your personal trainer website for potential clients to see and you can use them in marketing campaigns. Don't forget to harness the power of social media as well. Spread the word across your channels and get as many eyes on your articles as possible.

    Get on social media

    This is an obvious one and you are most likely already plugging away at it, but if you’re not get on it. We would recommend focussing on a couple social media channels first and gradually introducing others as you build more content.

    A good place to start is Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Shareable links, instant feedback, huge audiences, platforms that lend themselves to video, a wealth of news stories that you can share…these are great tools to promote yourself and your training business.

    If you use social media to promote the industry, your interest in it and your blog contributions/client success stories you will be tapping into a massive and engaged fitness audience.

    Get smart and set up business accounts so that you can run targeted ads and see what sort of reach and interest you are receiving. One tip from us, avoid hard selling on social media. Sell the journey, sell the process, show results and knowledge, but never hard sell.

    Market yourself in local businesses

    Try and anticipate where your potential clients are going to spend a lot of time; coffee shops and cafés, health shops, juice bars, barber/stylist, physio therapy waiting rooms.

    Create some flyers or business cards (neither of which are difficult or expensive) and leave them where potential clients might see them. This is free advertising and very easy marketing idea to execute, so shouldn’t be overlooked.

    Create a dedicated private Facebook group

    What better way to get your community talking and inspiring each other than a space for them to safely and privately talk to one another. This won’t directly help promote your business, but it may well help maintain good client relationships

    Having a space for current and former clients to stay connected and talk about their health and fitness journeys will keep you in mind for the long term, which will go a long way signing former clients to new sessions.

    Bring a Friend session

    Let your existing clients bring a friend in to one of their personal training sessions. This is a great tactic for meeting potential clients. Friends like to train together. Your client has probably spoken to friends about how great your sessions are together. By encouraging your client to bring a friend along to a session, you can blow them away with an amazing session.

    Share your fitness knowledge with the friend, make some suggestions for form and training and you might just bag yourself a new personal training client. Guess what it can work with family too!

    Never stop learning

    What's the secret to becoming more valuable as a personal trainer? CPDs.

    We say it all the time; as a personal trainer you should be looking to learn continue your education and growth with additional courses. Put yourself in the client’s shoes; would you rather train with a personal trainer who has learnt many skills by attending lots of courses, or with a personal trainer who has their basic qualification and not much else?

    Additional knowledge beyond your personal training course will enable you to work with the widest range of clients possible, good times!

    A successful personal trainer should always be looking to grow their fitness business. By taking CPD courses you can start specialising and begin to carve a niche for yourself. Diabetes and obesity management, children’s fitness, ante/postnatal training. Get qualified and you can offer something to the broadest client base.

    Other personal trainer marketing ideas -

    • Assign homework to personal training clients - They will feel more engaged, you will stay in mind and they feel like you have gone out of your way to add extra value
    • Business Cards - Old school, but still valuable. They are fairly cheap and easy to make and can be easily distributed to protentional clients, current clients to share with friends and can be left with local business owners to distribute on your behalf.

    Developing an effective marketing strategy for your personal training business doesn't have to be overly complex, but it does have to be reasonably well thought out.

    Identify what you want to achieve with your fitness business, develop your marketing ideas, make sure your marketing campaigns are targeted and practical (you can't reach out to everyone).

    Leverage your current clients to reach potential clients, speak with local business and develop a strong network for referrals. Manage your social media presence and most of all, work hard at it and watch your business grow.

    Want to learn how to be a personal trainer? Read the case study from TRAINFITNESS featuring our recently qualified PT Ashley Fry.

    Why did you want to do become a qualified personal trainer?

    I’m a graduate Sports Therapist, my sports therapy degree covered rehabilitation and strength and conditioning. However, a lot of the degree was theoretical and the practical side was lacking. So I decided to learn how to be a personal trainer with TRAINFITNESS, which gave me a real insight into the practical elements of training which has had a massive impact on my S&C knowledge.

    It also helped me with my communication skills which transfers nicely to rehab work. Being a personal trainer also happens to be a very credible and rewarding job!

    What made you look for a scholarship?

    I went to university later than my class mates due to wanting to help my mother with the finances at home. I did a three-year advanced apprenticeship at O2 head office in Slough when I was 18 and worked for a year in their security team. Although the money was great, when I turned 22 and I had helped as much as I could at home I decided it was time to chase my dream of becoming a sports therapist and trainer.

    Money has always been very tight in my family so without this scholarship I would not have been able to pursue the dream of becoming a personal trainer. PT courses can be very expensive for those without the finances, making it extremely difficult to become qualified through a reputable company. It is thanks to TRAINFITNESS that I could get on a course and chase the dream!

    Where did you hear about the TRAINFITNESS Scholarship?

    After googling and considering personal trainer courses, TRAINFITNESScame up during one of my searches. It stated on the site that only 4 people are fortunate enough to receive the opportunity and you do think "it'll never be me!" but as they say, you have to be in it to win it!

    Tell us about your time on the course?

    Personal Trainer Case Study

    The course I did was the part time Saturday in Dudley, Birmingham. It was a 12-week course. Everyone on the course varied in age came from different backgrounds, everyone had a different story to tell, which made the course a very fun and enjoyable environment to be in.

    Our teacher Hannah made the course as smooth and enjoyable as possible, there was a lot of banter and laughter. We worked hard but had a lot of fun doing it. Saturdays flew by. There wasn't a week where I had a negative moment or found myself not enjoying the course.

    The course had an excellent split of classroom theory and practical sessions in the gym which broke up the days nicely.

    My favourite part of the course was during the final weeks, we did some tests which involved -treadmills and push ups. The competitiveness was at an all-time high, and we laughed the whole way through, except after it took us 30 minutes to get up off the floor after the tests were over.

    What have you been up to since you qualified as a PT?

    I now work in a dual role as a Sports Therapist and a Personal Trainer at ShapeShifters, a personal training studio in Selly Oak. We specialise in body transformations and I was fortunate enough to be head hunted for the job, which I believe was largely down to having completed this scholarship.

    My day is split into assessing injuries, performing movement screens, and personal training our clients. The TRAINFITNESScourse has made my confidence skyrocket and I feel that I am a better person for having completed it.

    What’s next for you?

    I am slowly building up my own brand with 2 colleagues called Physical Performance Therapy which we hope in the future will really take off. We regularly put out content on social media ranging from training tutorials and rehab exercises, to treatment advice and techniques.     Why would you recommend TRAINFITNESS to others?

    Absolutely, without hesitation. The staff, the course, the support, everything I experienced was excellent. It’s a shame there aren’t more opportunities like the TRAINFITNESS scholarship out there!

    How to become a qualified Olympic Lifting Coach

    You’re looking at becoming an Olympic living coach? You’re not alone, driven by the rise of CrossFit and functional training - Olympic lifting, and our olympic weightlifting course, has never been more popular.

    Every personal trainer understands that the path to success and growth is through continuous learning. By investing in Continual Professional Development (CPDs) personal trainers can increase their skill set and knowledge, and ultimately offer far more to current and potential clients.

    Why – Olympic lifting is an incredibly challenging and hugely rewarding style of weightlifting. Snatches and clean and jerks are total body movements that are ideal for weightlifters, sportsmen and individuals looking to up their game.     How – A TRAINFITNESS certificate in Olympic weightlifting will arm PTs with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach clients the Olympic Lifts giving them something new to learn and improving their overall fitness and wellbeing. The Olympic Lifting course is delivered part time. Students work though online course material and once completed will book onto and attend a combined training and assessment day.

    On the day a tutor will break down each exercise into separate movement patterns showing how to perform each movement cleanly, safely and with perfect form. Students will practice the movements, perfecting their lifting technique whilst also working on their coaching skills and programme design.

    The certificate in Olympic Lifting is recognised by REPs and is worth 16 CPD points

    Take away – Olympic lifts are challenging and technical. Any trainer needs a solid understanding of the movement patterns before introducing them to a personal training session. Once a PT has that understanding and knowledge however, Olympic Lifts can have a positive impact on client’s sessions; new movements, more excitement and new challenges.

    So you're thinking about becoming a Yoga instructor? Your in the right place, here we will introduce you to our yoga instructor courses and outline the skills you need to become a Yoga Instructor.

    The term “yoga" derives from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning to yoke or concentrate This has been taken to mean the union of mind and body. Those who practice yoga look to find an amalgamation of body and spirit and achieve a greater understanding and knowledge of oneself.

    While there is no record of who invented Yoga, the Yoga Sutra (over 2,000 years old) provides the framework for mastering the mind and emotions while offering advice on spiritual growth; the framework upon which all modern-day yoga is practiced.

    The benefits of yoga are numerous. As well as the improvements to mental well-being, yoga training has been shown to have a positive effect on physical well-being too. Some benefits of yoga practice include:

    With all these benefits it is clear why the practice of yoga is so popular and why yoga instructors are in demand.

    What are some of the characteristics needed by yoga instructors?

    Yoga teachers will typically find themselves delivering yoga classes in a gym, health club, private yoga studios or in the homes of clients. There is also the option of working at health retreats, cruise ships, spas and other locations around the world.

    During a class, yoga teachers work through a series of choreographed poses, breathing techniques known as pranyamas and also relaxation techniques. You don't have to be an expert at yoga to take a yoga teacher training course, but a solid grounding in yoga practice certainly helps.

    Successful yoga teaching isn't however, just a case of understanding the yoga poses and breathing techniques.

    How to become a yoga instructor

    Success comes from the yoga instructor’s ability to guide a class through the required movements with perfect form. A high level of patience is a minimum requirement for all yoga teachers as the abilities of yoga students will vary greatly from class to class.

    Excellent yoga teachers must possess great observational skills to identify problems, help fix form and posture and must have good communications skills to help guide students.

    Yoga teachers should also be able to practice what they preach. Constant practice at the movements and a deep understanding of yoga philosophy will pay dividends.

    Becoming a certified yoga instructor is less about earning a certificate and more about immersing yourself in a lifestyle.

    How do I become a Yoga Instructor?

    The TRAINFITNESSyoga teacher training course is delivered part-time. Students work through online material, complete 30 hours practicum and a portfolio consisting of worksheets, a journal (evidencing 60 hours of yoga practice) and session planning.

    Finally, a student will book onto and attend the relevant scheduled training course days and assessment day. A student will submit the practicum evidence and hand in the portfolio on the assessment day.

    The training course covers philosophy and fundamentals of yoga, programming a yoga session and delivering yoga classes. The training course is accredited by YMCA Awards and is recognised by REPs.

    What options do I have once I become a qualified yoga instructor?

    Once students have completed a yoga instructor training course, there are a number of opportunities in the health and fitness world. Newly qualified yoga teachers could find themselves teaching yoga in a health club or a gym, delivering a regular schedule of yoga classes.

    A certified yoga instructor may also choose to go down the route of boutique/specialist yoga studios.

    Yoga teachers have the option of working abroad, teach in spas, health retreats and holiday resorts. With time, patience, finances and some business acumen, yoga teachers could also set up their own yoga studios.

    If you build your network and have enough popularity, a yoga teacher could also create and run yoga retreats alongside other wellness packages.

    Yoga teachers are often paid on an hourly rate, or paid by class. That pay depends very much on location and type of gym/venue. As there are various forms of yoga to enjoy, bikram yoga, ashtanga yoga, hatha, it shouldn’t prove too difficult to find a class to teach.

    Employed or self-employed yoga teachers will generally earn up to £30 per session. To maximise earning potential running yoga classes in a venue that is either rented or owned, is recommended.

    We interviewed Steph Elswood after she completed her personal training course with TRAINFITNESS

    We were lucky enough to get a little bit of time with former student Steph Elswood. She gave us some insight into her time on the course, and what she thinks it takes to be a great PT.

    What made you want to become a personal trainer?

    I post a lot of fitness videos on my youtube channel and Instagram. I wanted to be accountable and qualified for the information I was giving out. I wanted to expand my knowledge and be more helpful to my followers. I was being asked to train groups with big brands and companies. I wanted to make sure I have a PT qualification to do so. I also want to be better at training myself too. I wanted to be able to mix up my trainer, push myself and challenge myself more.

    What do you think you bring as a personal trainer that is different/makes you stand out?

    I have a background in dancing and trained professionally for 6 years. I incorporate elements and movement that may be different to other trainers and can also specialise in training dancers I know what they need to perform better.

    What do you think makes a great personal trainer?

    I am happy, positive and encouraging. I can make my clients laugh when they are resting to make the sessions seem fun. I always reinforce that exercising should be enjoyable and not a punishment.

    How did you get into the world of health and fitness?

    I have always been active from a young age. During my dance training I suffered with an eating disorder. I fell into the world of health and fitness totally by accident and discovered my love for it whilst I was in recovery.

    What would your advice be to someone considering becoming a personal trainer?

    Be prepared to commit to it from the beginning. Have an idea of the type of personal trainer you want to be and have a basic understanding of the gym and exercises.

    Who’s your fitspiration and why?

    Alexia Clark. She is the QUEEN of workouts! She is a beautiful, strong woman that encourages others to get moving. She is so creative and I think her workouts are incredible. She practices what she preaches and looks amazing for it.

    Never leave the house without?

    My phone and a bottle of water.

    What’s your favourite type of workout?

    I love a heavy leg day or a full body circuit. I do a lot of travelling so when I'm away, I set a timer for 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off. I then alternate with upper body, lower body, core and cardio exercises.

    Final thought on the course and your time at TRAINFITNESS

    It was so nice to be in an environment with like-minded people that have similar goals and values to my own. The training was intense. I learnt a lot from my tutor but also from the other students. Everyone had such a diverse way and views and I loved learning how other people enjoyed training

    Personal Training Case Study – Ben Cairns

    My Name is Ben Cairns and I’m 26, from Milton Keynes, I lived in Spain when I was young but I moved back to Milton Keynes when I was 13 to finish school. I joined the army at 18 after two years at college studying business and plumbing and realising it wasn’t for me.

    I served in the British Army for 7 years, at first in 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery then later the 1st Royal Horse Artillery where I was deployed on operations to Afghanistan in 2012. When I came back I realised how much I loved fitness and training. I’ve always been an active person; snowboarding, skiing, kayaking, rock climbing just to name a few of the activities I enjoy. Being in the army, I was able to continue doing the things I loved and I was also able to become a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) for the British Army.

    My love of fitness means I am always looking for the next challenge. One of my latest challenges was taking part in an Ultra Triathlon for charity where I cycled from Edinburgh to Dover, then swam the channel to Calais and finally ran from Calais to Brussels.

    Being a PTI for the British Army I knew I wanted to pursue this as a career and so, upon leaving the army I decided to achieve my personal training qualification with TRAINFITNESS . I used the army enhanced learning credits to pay for the course which was great. My plan was to get my qualification and then move abroad to Australia and work as a personal trainer.

    I knew I wanted to be a personal trainer as I love fitness and training and I love helping others reach their goals and achieve something they never thought they could achieve! It is quite amazing what the human body can achieve with the proper coaching, hard work and dedication.

    I found out about the course from a google search, I soon found out that TRAIN had worked with the British Army and ex serving personnel in the past so I knew straight away that this was the company for me. Whilst enrolling on the course I found TRAIN to have great customer service and they made the whole process so easy for me.

    The course was incredibly in depth! The amount of information you learn on a daily basis is amazing, and from such knowledgeable instructors with years and years of experience. You can pick the brains of just about anyone at TRAINFITNESS and they are always willing to help.

    The course modules cover so much more than you might originally think, things that you didn’t even know a PT would have to know. Anyone can come up with a range of exercises to do and give it to someone to do, but knowing WHY you are giving them the specific exercises and repetitions and coaching points etc is the real key!

    All the instructors at TRAINFITNESS are exceptional and truly passionate about what they do, which makes the whole learning experience much more enjoyable. The tutors come from different walks of life and have all achieved so many different things. The best thing, they are all prepared to make time for the students to share that knowledge and wisdom.

    The things I didn’t expect during the course were the opportunities to learn things that aren’t included on the course. We had a taster session in Animal Flow which was great for example. Embracing your inner animal was a fantastic experience.

    These moments made the course stand out from any other course. In fact, the extras might be my favourite part of the course, the variety of what you learn and experience whilst you are there was incredible.

    The bond you have between you and your classmates and the instructors is very much like a family (#TRAINfamily) which was a huge bonus.Training with friends and likeminded people made the experience a lot of fun. Most of us are still in touch to this day!

    Of course, the most challenging part for me and I think for most people are the written assessments and practical assessments, more so the written ones as I seem to just panic in those situations but the team at TRAINFITNESS they help you every step of the way, making sure you are prepared for your assessment and even using their personal time if needed you needed the extra help.

    We spoke to online personal trainer Dave Smith about what it takes to make a success of online personal training

    While the role of a personal trainer hasn’t changed, the delivery systems and methods by which a PT reaches his clients and helps them to achieve their goals certainly has. Working out of a gym or a dedicated studio is still the preferred choice of most client and PTs, but there is a movement to more online programming and coaching.

    The model is ideal for those clients who can’t make sessions, prefer to train in their own gym or have training experience but just need someone to design a new programme for them.

    For a PT it makes sense, no juggling of clients, no need to try and squeeze an extra hour out of a day. Simply have a consultation (online) build a programme around set goals and then keep tabs. But how do you go about setting up your online business, what are the ins and outs of successfully building an online empire?

    We spoke to Dave Smith, “Canada’s Top Fitness Professional” in 2013, he goes over all the aspects of setting up your online PT delivery and offers some great tips on making it a successful endeavor.

    Here’s what he had to say -

    Ten years ago my fitness business was booming. I owned my own personal training studio; I had a weekly calendar booked with amazing personal training clients; and I was earning more money than I ever had in my lifetime.

    This is what I had worked so hard for, so why didn’t I feel settled?

    Success came with a cost. My schedule was booked and my gym was full, so what was the next step? Open another gym? Open a chain of gyms? Those were options, but managing facilities wasn’t my dream. I wanted to help more clients.

    Then I read a book that opened my eyes to an entirely different type of career. That book was “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferris; and it described a type of business that was the exact opposite of the one I had built. Using the Internet, Ferris explained how an online business can work for you instead of you working for it.

    I was skeptical.

    “The idea sounds great, but how can a personal trainer create an online business? My clients need to see me in the gym. That’s what keeps them coming back.” Still, the message of that book kept gnawing away at me, so I began playing around with ways I could serve my clients online. Little by little my online business grew and within one year I sold my gym and became a full-time online personal trainer.

    How Does Online Personal Training Work?

    Many personal trainers share the same skepticism that I once had: How can I help people exercise if I’m not in the gym with them?

    The truth is, you’re selling yourself short if you think that your most valuable role to a client is being with them in the gym, demonstrating exercises, counting reps, and correcting form. Yes, those services are valuable, but you have something more valuable to offer: Results.

    Think of your most successful clients. What did you provide that helped them make such great life changes?

    I believe that there are 3 things a truly great personal trainer offers and you likely do these without even realizing it: You build confidence. You develop consistency. You show care.

    Those are the 3 Cs that are necessary for successful coaching and you can deliver these as an online personal trainer every bit as easily (perhaps even more so) as you can working with clients face-to-face.

    1. Confidence - An online personal trainer helps clients believe they can succeed and delivers a path for them to follow. When a client is confident that she can transform her body, the likelihood of her taking action to achieve her goals skyrockets. Setting goals, tracking results, and celebrating milestones help build that confidence.

    2. Consistency – An online personal trainer helps clients manage their schedules and stay accountable so that agreed upon healthy actions happen. This could take form in accountability calls, reminder messages, or habit-tracking apps that help build consistent actions needed for results to show.

    3. Care – An online personal trainer ensures that clients feel like they have someone walking the journey with them. The client is not alone. Building supportive coach-client relationships is easy with all of the social tools available online nowadays. It’s amazing how a well-timed motivational text message or video can be a difference-maker in a client’s day.

    When you deliver the 3 Cs, whether in-person or as an online coach, your clients’ lives will be changed.

    Do Clients Really Want to Work with an Online Personal Trainer?

    Think back 10 years ago. Imagine someone suggesting that instead of hailing a cab to get you where you need to go, you instead hop into a complete stranger’s personal car to catch a ride. Or imagine walking into a grocery store, picking up all your items, and then leaving without stopping in a checkout line to pay for anything.

    Today it’s commonplace to grab a ride using Uber, and Amazon has already paved the way for checkout-less grocery stores, but at one time those concepts would have been hard to imagine.

    The fact is, as the pace of life continues to speed up, people are looking for convenient, time-saving services more than ever before. That’s why many of us get our taxes prepared by online accountants; we get prescriptions written in virtual doctor’s visits; and it’s why more people are turning to online fitness coaching than ever before.

    Speaking from experience, my clients love the flexibility that online coaching provides. They have a personalized fitness plan to follow, but how they fit that plan into their weekly routine is up to them.

    They never have to jockey for prime time personal training slots in my schedule, and it allows them to work with me, a coach they trust, even if we don’t live in the same city. In fact, most of my current clients don’t even live in Canada, but they would never think twice about it.

    If personal trainers don’t adapt to the evolving needs of consumers, it’s certain that new apps, technologies, and services will enter the market to fill the void. It’s up to you to stay ahead of the curve by exploring new ways that you can serve your clients today and in the future

    How Can You Become an Online Personal Trainer

    Getting started as an online personal trainer is easier than you might expect. Here are the 4 steps I recommend:

    1.  Get Experience – As an online personal trainer, it is very helpful to first gain experience coaching clients in-person. Understanding how to cue exercises, how to troubleshoot common obstacles, and how to keep clients motivated are the types of skills you will develop quickly when working with clients face-to-face. Once you have those skills, translating them into the role of an online coach is fairly simple.
    2.  Check Your Insurance – Since online personal training is still in its relative infancy, some insurance providers aren’t sure how to provide coverage. Double-check to make sure your insurance will cover your online services before you begin.
    3.  Start Slowly – The easiest way to add online coaching to the list of services you offer is to transition clients slowly. For example, if you have been working with a client 3 times per week in the gym, you might offer to see him twice per week instead, with the third session being assigned as homework that you will deliver online. See what works best for you and your clients.
    4.  Build Your Systems – Online training can actually take up more of your time than working with clients in-person if you don’t have the right systems in place. Fortunately, there are apps and online services that can automate much of your work. For example, you can deliver video workout programs with a few clicks on your computer and then set automated follow-up messages to keep your clients on track. The better systems you have, the better service you’ll provide and the less work you’ll actually be doing.

    Above all else, remember why you became a personal trainer in the first place. I suspect you did so because you wanted to help as many people as possible get healthy and fit. Online training is simply another way to achieve that goal, so at least consider if it might be the right step for you.     We Talk to Ike Fallon About His Journey to Becoming a Personal Trainer

    Ike Fallon recently completed his Diploma in Personal Training with us. We sat down and had a chat with him to find out more about him, why he wanted to do his course and what he thought about the course itself.

    Tell us a bit about you

    I’m a professional dancer, singer, actor and choreographer. I’m originally from Worcester/Birmingham but have been living in London for 3 years now.

    As a dancer I have been very lucky to compete on the international stage, competing at the Dance World Cup where I have won gold twice and a silver. At National level I have won silver and bronze.

    Away from dance I have worked in TV and theatre. I’ve been on Children In Need, Jack and the Beanstalk with Dani Harmer, and my most recent and upcoming credit – FAME the UK tour, with the likes of Jorgie Porter and Mica Paris.

    Why did you want to do the course?

    I wanted to do this course because I’ve always loved training and teaching other people. I’ve been teaching dance for a few years now and I love building that connection that comes with working with people. Doing a personal training course was the next logical step for me, combining my two passions- dance and fitness.

    Why TRAINFITNESS and tell us a bit about the course?

    TRAINFITNESS was highly recommended by many sporting and dance professionals I know. Through those contacts I was able to make an informed choice and I’m really glad I made it, I had no hesitation in signing up.

    The course is intense, no doubt about it. TRAINFITNESS offer a lot in a short amount of time, but the support and the delivery of the course are fantastic.

    At no point during the course did I have any difficulty staying focussed and that is down to the friendly atmosphere and the motivation generated by the tutors and my fellow students. I’ve made some good friends and connections here.

    The course actually exceeded my expectations as I came away with several qualifications more than I originally intended. This has made my future career prospects much broader. Something I particularly liked about the course was the tutor. Working with someone with that much experience and really connecting with them was a highlight. There was so much knowledge to absorb and they really committed time to us to make sure we understood all the information and knew how to apply it.

    Out of everything, I most enjoyed the balance of theory and practical. Coming into the course I was expecting a lot more practical work, but you get a really good amount of theory which you then apply directly to the practical aspects. I enjoyed studying the process and then applying the learning on the gym floor, breaking it all down with your classmates and the tutors. I’ve also improved my own training with the knowledge I’ve picked up.

    Any advice for anyone looking to do a Personal Training Course?

    My two bits of advice are –

    1. Keep on top of paper work!
    2. And for anyone interested in a career change, don’t stress too much or feel overwhelmed by the intensity of the course, the tutors know their stuff and your fellow students will be supporting you all the way.

    Now I have completed my course I can combine dance and fitness together in my career, two things I’m very passionate about and I couldn’t be happier! Overall, studying at TRAINFITNESS was a great experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to complete my Level 4 and 5 with them.
