Frequently asked questions

Are the Exercise to Music courses recognised?

Yes: by REPs, ACSM and CIMSPA.

What do I need to attend?

Once you’ve enrolled you can log onto our website and access your Student Desktop. Through it you’ll be able to complete the online course material and, depending on the study option you choose, either book onto an assessment day/s, optional training day or a clinic.

Using the TRAINFITNESS app* you can also do all of this on the move via the Mobile Student Desktop.

If you’ve chosen our Distance study option, you’ll complete as home study the online course material and portfolio, and you’ll complete 20 hours of practicum (where you observe a qualified group exercise instructor in a commercial fitness facility). You’ll then attend the scheduled assessment day/s you’ve booked onto, at which time you’ll perform the theory and practical assessments and hand in your completed portfolio. You’ll send to us either by post, email or the Help Desk evidence of your completed practicum. You cannot hand in your completed practicum on an assessment day.

If you’ve chosen our Part Time study option, you’ll complete as home study the online course material and portfolio, and you’ll then attend the scheduled clinic you’ve booked onto. Part Time clinics consist of six days (Saturdays and Sundays), generally over three consecutive weekends. You’ll hand in your completed portfolio while on clinic.

For both Distance and Part Time study there is a requirement for the learner to deliver the practical assessment to a minimum of six participants. Because there will generally be at least one other learner attending an assessment day, learners have the option of bringing just three participants (rather than six) with them. This arrangement means that on an assessment day a learner will share their participants with another learner so that they each have six participants for their assessments. We are unable to tell you the time that you will perform your practical assessment on an assessment day. Until you are called to perform your assessment, you and your participants are required onsite (generally from 8.45am). Rather than attend an assessment day, you can apply to us to submit a video for the practical assessment (for which you’ll need six participants). Conditions and additional fees apply to the video assessment option, so please call the Learner Support team for more information.

You will need to download our app onto your mobile phone or tablet and bring that device with you to access the assessment fx music tracks (via the app). Please familiarise yourself with the corresponding assessment fx video tracks.

A PDF copy of the portfolio and static online course material is included in the course fee and which you can print directly from the Student Desktop. It’s important you keep the original copy of your portfolio safe in case anything happens to the copy you send or hand to us. Never post an original portfolio to us. Once we have marked your portfolio and updated the results in our system, we will scan and email a copy of the marked portfolio to you. We do not return portfolios by post.

What are the prerequisites?

No prior fitness qualification is required before starting one of our Exercise to Music Instructor courses.

A basic level of English and Math is necessary to understand the content.

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is compulsory, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary. Relevant personal experience of the subject is helpful. For example, prior participation in group exercise classes will be helpful for our ETM courses.

What support is available during the Exercise to Music course?

Learner Support – As well as the support you receive from your tutor on a scheduled clinic (if applicable), you’ll also have access to our Learner Support team, dedicated to assisting you with study questions and queries. The team is generally available via phone, email or through the Helpdesk Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm; and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm GMT, excluding Bank holidays and office closures.

eClasses – We offer a library of eClasses on a variety of topics covered in your course, during which we go over content and answer questions you might have about it. Once enrolled, the library can be found under My Account on our website.

Feedback Service – During your Exercise to Music Instructor course you’ll be assessed in various ways, including via portfolio, theory and practical assessments. You’re able to send us a video of what you intend to do for your practical assessment and or what you intend to submit as your portfolio beforehand and one of our qualified assessors will arrange a time to call you to discuss feedback. You need to do this at least two weeks prior to the due date of the assessment or the submission date of the portfolio. Additional fees apply.

Optional Training Day – If you enrol on the Distance study option and would like extra help or guidance with the more practical elements of your course, we have optional training days scheduled around the country which you can book onto and attend. On these days you can receive valuable tutor feedback and a day of face-to-face practical training in a studio environment. An optional training day will also cover the practicum (work experience) requirement of your course, if there is one. Optional training days are not included in your course, nor in the cost of your course. Additional fees apply.
