Love your yoga practice? Why not share your love and teach others.
Teaching yoga requires a passion. A passion to help others and see them succeed over time. A recent study published by The BMJ reported those who participated in yoga classes perceived greater well-being and lower stress. Who doesn’t want to help people achieve that?
The benefits of yoga practice go way beyond those of regular fitness classes. The yoga philosophy centres around the mind-body connection. While practicing, we turn our senses or attention inwards, a technique referred to as Pratyahara. During our practice we keep our focus on the sensations of the body, always returning our focus to these sensations when we realise we have become distracted and notice our mind has wondered. In yoga, this is called Dhyana. It’s about simply observing the body and quietening the mind.
When you teach yoga, you learn about the different poses, the history of yoga, and the philosophy of yoga. This in turn helps you to deepen your own yoga practice and better understand the benefits of yoga.
Yoga practice is not about the poses, it’s not about how flexible you are or what “tricks” you can do. It is a journey of self-discovery. It’s about becoming more centred, more at peace with your inner world, thus improving your outer world.
Those who complete their yoga teacher training are aware of this aspect and in some way have already experienced this. They are already on the journey to self-improvement and have a desire to connect with others also on this journey.
Yoga is all about connecting with your true self. As a yoga teacher, you have the ability to help others connect with their own inner truths to find more happiness and peace in their lives.
Yoga is quite a unique form of fitness in that unlike most other disciplines, it helps people find their authentic voice. When teaching yoga you have the opportunity to help others find their voice so they may share their message with the world.
As a yoga teacher, you have the ability to make a positive impact on the world. Yoga is a powerful tool for change, and by teaching yoga, you can help make the world a better place.
Interest in yoga continues to grow. Every year between December & January, there is a 73% increase in search volume for yoga studios & classes. You will see on the graph here under “How popular is yoga?”, searches on Google continue to increase year-on-year. More and more people are realising the benefits of yoga training.
The average salary for a class is £27.54, however the more experience you gain and more you may charge. It’s been reported private yoga sessions can be charged at over £60-70. Unlike other group exercise classes, yoga teachers do not perform all the postures throughout the class. The job of a yogi is to observe the group and offer guidance. This means you will be able to teach more classes in a week than most other group exercises instructors.
After obtaining your yoga teacher certification and gaining your level 3 qualification, there are many different employment opportunities available to you. Yoga can be a great side hustle or a permanent, full-time position. You can be in control of how much and how often you work.
Here are just some work scenarios. There are more but these will give you an idea of your options.
