This Level 3 Exercise Referral course is designed for fitness professionals and personal trainers who wish to join their local register and work with people who’ve been medically referred onto an exercise programme by their doctor.
From understanding medical conditions for exercise referral to instructing exercise with referred patients, this is a well-recognised specialist qualification that can help you develop additional skills and open up new business opportunities for you.
As a stand alone course we offer it via distance study, helping you to fit your study into your lifestyle.
Once completed successfully you’ll be eligible to log this course with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) to receive Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”) points. The course also meets the criteria for official ACSM Approved Provider status◊.

If you’ve enrolled on the Exercise Referral course as a standalone course or if you’ve enrolled on the Distance study option of either the Personal Trainer Specialist Diploma or the Personal Trainer Master Diploma, you’ll complete as home study the online course material for this course and then book onto and attend a scheduled assessment day on which you’ll hand in your portfolio and perform your theory and practical assessments. You need to bring an apparently healthy client with you for the practical assessment. Alternatively, you can arrange with us to submit with your portfolio a video for the practical assessment (for which you’ll also need an apparently healthy client). Conditions and additional fees apply to the video assessment option, so please call the Learner Support team for more information.
If you’ve chosen to study the Part Time or Full Time study option for either the Personal Trainer Specialist Diploma or the Personal Trainer Master Diploma, you’ll complete as home study the online course material before attending the Exercise Referral clinic days on which you’ll participate in tuition, perform the theory assessments (if applicable) and practical assessment, and hand in your portfolio.
A basic level of English and Maths is necessary to understand the content.
You’ll hold either a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (either Gym or Exercise to Music), a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training, a Level 3 Pilates Instructor qualification or Level 3 Yoga Instructor qualification. If you hold any of these qualifications, the certificate for it must have been issued within three years of the date you enrol on the Exercise Referral course with us.
Learner Support – You’ll have access to our Learner Support team, dedicated to assisting you with study questions and queries. The team is generally available via phone, email or through the Help Desk Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm; and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm GMT, excluding Bank holidays and office closures.
Feedback Service – During the Exercise Referral course you’ll be assessed in various ways, including via portfolio, theory and practical assessments. You’re able to send us a video of what you intend to do for your practical assessment and or what you intend to submit as your portfolio beforehand and one of our qualified assessors will arrange a time to call you to discuss feedback. You need to do this at least two weeks prior to the due date of the assessment or the submission date of the portfolio. Additional fees apply.
